The Chief Compliance Officer

The most senior embodiment of the compliance function — with a formal mandate, functional independence and a direct line to the board.

Mandate · independence · board accountability

Why a Chief, not only an Officer

As organisations grow and regulation intensifies, the compliance function needs leadership, not only operation: someone who sets the mandate, owns the risk appetite, manages the tone at the top and answers to the board. That is the Chief Compliance Officer.

Three grades of one function

The compliance function is exercised at three levels of seniority and proximity. The Compliance Advisor advises from outside; the Compliance Officer operates the function inside the organisation; the Chief Compliance Officer leads it at the executive level and answers to the board. This site is the leadership grade.

Officer — operates the function

The function that runs compliance day to day. It lives at complianceofficer.pt and complianceofficer.eu.
